Presentation box supplied along with a leaflet explaining the history of the Quaich. ![]() The Quaich was for centuries, a common domestic utensil in Scotland. It was the dish from which the Scot supped his porridge and drank whisky, brandy or ale. Traditionally the Quaich was made from wood. The centre of the bowl was usually decorated with a silver coin or an engraved disc or print, with coat-of-arms, initials, motto or familiar phrase. The disc served the function of masking and sealing the centre of the bowl where the points of the staves met. (staves – meeting of wood). Quaich’s began to be made of metal; pewter, silver or gold in the late 17th century. Quaich is derived from the Gaelic “cuach” which, in turn, derives from low Latin “caucus” – a drinking cup. These drinking cups were very widely used in covenanting times and are mentioned in the old Jacobite Song; “Then let the flowing Quaich go round and boldly let the pibroch sound Till every glen and rock resound The name o’Royal Charlie Welcome Charlie, o’er the main Our hieland hills are a’ your ain Welcome to our Isle again Welcome Royal Charlie” A Quaich is an ideal souvenir, wedding, christening or birthday gift and is often used by St Andrew’s Societies and Burns’ clubs for commemorating Annual Dinners and other special occasions. |
